Did you know that every conviction and arrest is kept on record? You might have known this, but did you know that it does not matter how long ago it happened, and that even a 30 year old criminal offense will stay on record? It's true. Even if you are found not guilty in the end, the arrest still stays on file. However, there is something called expungement, which is the removal of these records. If there is something that you would like expunged, it is important to discuss this with our attorneys.
Have you or a loved one been arrested for or convicted of any crime in the state of Michigan? You may be able to get the records expunged and our attorneys can help. Contact our Michigan Criminal Defense Attorneys at Your Best Defense, PLC today!
Why should you get your criminal records expunged? Almost anyone can access these records, including but not limited to:
- Schools
- Employers
- Credit Agencies
- Licensing Boards
You will usually be eligible for an expungement if you have never had an expungement before. It also depends on the crime that was committed. Certain criminal acts are not always eligible for expungement. Additionally, keep in mind that expungement will not always wipe the slate clean completely. For example, if you are convicted of a
crime in the future, the crime that was expunged in the past may still be brought into the picture for the purpose of determining sentencing or other types of punishment.
You did the crime, you did the time, and now it's in your past and you are a law abiding citizen. Unfortunately, the record of your crime is still there and you may find yourself being judged for it if someone performs a background check on you. It just doesn't seem fair. Just think: with an expungement, it will almost be like no arrest or conviction ever happened, and you will be able to honestly state to family, friends, employers and others that you do not have a criminal record.
